We were recently called out as a mobile mechanic in the Summerville area to inspect a 2012 Ford Fusion that another shop had diagnosed as needing a $1,000 rack and pinion replacement plus labor.

The customer had already purchased the rack and pinion and waited for the part to arrive before calling us to install it.

Before installing any parts, we always perform our own inspection.

Once the vehicle was lifted and the wheel removed, the real problem became obvious. The outer tie rod had completely snapped off, while the ball joint stud was still bolted to the steering knuckle. With the wheel off, the damage was clearly visible.

Instead of installing the expensive rack and pinion the customer already bought, we explained the actual issue and replaced the outer tie rod.
